This weekend MIT went up to Amesbury, MA to play in the Seacoast RFC
10's tournament. Granted that none of the people that went up had ever
played 10 on 10 rugby before we performed fairly well.
The first match saw MIT break its typically slow early performance by
scoring a try within the first minute of play. That was the end of the
highlights for that match though. Poor tackling and a couple of
defensive breakdowns resulted in MIT losing 5-28 to a very competent
Worchester squad (eventual tournament winner).
The second match placed MIT against BC High alum. MIT again came out
strong and dominated. Forward play was crisp and the backs handled the
ball well. The final was 25-5 or something like that. Tries scored by
Cody, Patrick, Linus, Barry, and Wiggy.
Finally since MIT was 1 and 1 on the day it played against Dartmouth in
the consolation final. Dartmouth was an exceptional side that was in
effect robbed of a 2-0 record by questionable officiating. Nobody on
MIT let that scare them though. Tech came out and controlled the
match. The forwards steamrolled the smaller, but fit Dartmouth front
line and took control of the first half. Dartmouth wouldn't quit
though. In the second half Dartmouth roared back and brought the match
back to within a try. MIT played tough, but lost possession in
Dartmouth territory. Dartmouth scored and converted with 2 minutes
left. For some reason the official decided the game was over and MIT
lost. It was later confirmed that the match was ended early by a
mistake by the referee. Final score Dartmouth 28 MIT 25?.
So in the end it was a good weekend of rugby. No major injuries and a
great tune-up for the season. Shout outs to Linus for playing possibly
his last rugby for MIT, Evan for organizing the tournament duties and
taking kicks in the first game, and all of the new and seasoned vets
that took the drive up for the tournament.
